AKWESASNE -- The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe’s Forestry Resources Program will help tribe members with spring cleanup. Beginning April 1, people can apply for wood chipping services and hazardous tree removal. The deadline is June 30, with work starting when weather allows.

People can sign up at the tribe’s Environment Division office, 449 Frogtown Road, starting April 1 during business hours.

Chipping is the removal of dead and down trees, limbs and branches. Hazardous trees removal involves identifying trees that have the potential to cause injury or property damage. It requires specialized training and equipment, the tribe said.

People must complete an application and have a site assessment conducted by the tribe’s forestry technician. The project’s funding is limited. Signing up for either service does not guarantee that it will be provided, the tribe said.

The Forestry Resources Program will give preference to those age 60 and up, as well as the disabled who are on fixed or limited incomes. The program will request proof of eligibility and disability where it is not readily apparent, the tribe said.
