CANTON -- St. Lawrence University's Nature Up North is seeking St. Lawrence County residents interested in aiding in two "citizen science" projects.
The group is asking locals to submit their observation of spring "firsts," such as first bird or bug sighting, first flower blooming, first daytime temperature above 60 degrees, etc. and submit them to the group's website.
The group says those who have been collecting first-arrival data over the previous years can submit photocopies of their findings with something stating from where the observations were taken, if they choose.
"If we can generate a large enough data set, we will eventually be able to examine the timing of certain bird migrations, plant growth patterns, and other trends," reads and email from Nature Up North.
For another project, the group is asking people to "adopt" a maple tree and monitor it over time.
They are looking for the date the buds first open, flowering data and the date the leaves fully unfold.
To participate, go to natureupnorth.com, create a free account and click the "Citizen Science" page.
To send in recordings from previous years, email info@natureupnorth.com or send photocopies to Biology Department, St. Lawrence University, Canton, NY 13617.
