CANTON -- Students at St. Lawrence University are raising awareness about privacy rights on campus through an interactive event on Friday.

A handful of Students For Liberty members at the university will be dressed as "government surveillance officers" as they approach students for silly reasons and present them with a "warrant" to search their bag.

When the students refuse, the activists will educate them about their Fourth Amendment rights.

The goal of the event is to educate young people about the erosion of Americans' privacy rights under policies such as the Patriot Act and National Security Agency counter-terrorism programs.

The event starts at 4 p.m. on the first floor of the Sullivan Student Center at St. Lawrence University.

Event organizer and Students For Liberty Campus Coordinator Ian Brennan said they are hosting this event because the issue impacts everyone, whether they realize it or not.

"Not only is the NSA violating the privacy rights of U.S. citizens, it also has access to electronic communications in nearly every country in the world," Brennan said.

"As Students For Liberty, we object to the infringement of individual privacy rights and call on the government to abide by the rules of the U.S. Constitution which are meant to restrain government from turning to tyranny."
