St. Lawrence University’s Department of Music will perform a newer version of Mozart’s Requiem and other orchestral works in Ogdensburg on Nov. 11 and Canton on Nov. 12.

Directed by Christian Hosmer and Barry Torres, the music department will perform a new version of the “Requiem” by Mozart scholar Robert Levin. Left unfinished at his death, the “Requiem” was completed mostly by Mozart’s assistant Franz Süssmayr to fulfill a secret commission. This is the version that has been performed traditionally for more than two centuries. Recent scholarship has unfolded new sources, and there have been several new completions of the work, including Levin’s, with improvements to Süssmayer’s work and new music composed from sketches by Mozart.

The music department will also perform the overture to Mozart’s “The Abduction from the Seraglio,” “Three German Dances,” and “Sinfonia Concertante for Violin, Viola and Orchestra, Second Movement.” St. Lawrence student soprano Nicholle Gotham ’20 of Gouverneur and alto Thressa Zimmerman ’17 of Canton will be featured as soloists in “Requiem.”

The performances take place at 8 p.m. Nov. 11, at Ogdensburg Free Academy’s George Hall Auditorium and at 8 p.m. Nov. 12, at St. Lawrence University’s Gunnison Memorial Chapel.

Both events are free and open to the public and will feature University Chorus, the Laurentian Singers, St. Lawrence’s String Orchestra and members of the Wind Ensemble.
