CANTON -- St. Lawrence University has won national recognition for its campus food five years running.

The Daily Meal, a New York City-based food magazine that covers restaurants, food trends, healthy dining and cooking, has once again ranked St. Lawrence as one of the best colleges for food in America.

SLU finished 60th out of the 75 top school food services.

The publication considered more than 2,000 American colleges and universities and narrowed its final list down to just 75 schools. The Daily Meal looked at specific efforts each college was making toward improving taste, nutrition and community and deciding what was really exceptional.

“Our mission is to provide high-quality food and service in a safe, friendly, comfortable environment,” said Cynthia Atkins, director of Dining and Conference Services. “It is good to know that the students feel that we are doing that.”

Several factors were considered in The Daily Meal’s ranking, including healthy food, sustainability, accessibility and service, and nutrition education. There’s also the “X-factor,” which looks for the fun side of the food scene on campus. The publication highlighted St. Lawrence’s “Recipes from Home program,” which has been in place since 1987. The program encourages students to share family recipes to be served in the dining halls, and themed events—such as Canadian Thanksgiving and the annual Adirondack Themed Dinner—tend to be popular with students.
