CANTON -- A total of 537 degrees were awarded at Sunday’s commencement ceremony at St. Lawrence University.
There were 517 candidates for bachelor’s degrees.
Fourteen graduated with summa cum laude honors.
Fourteen students were to receive master of education degrees, five master of science in mental health counseling degrees, and two recipients of Certificates of Advances Studies in Education.
The five most popular majors this year were, in descending order, economics, business in the liberal arts, psychology, performance and communication arts, and government.
The ceremony was held indoors at Appleton Arena due to the threat of rain Sunday.
Students, faculty, staff and guests heard remarks from honorary degree recipients Haruyoshi “Yoshi” Udagawa ’74, faculty emeritus at the Toyo University, and Melanie Smeallie Mbuyi ’77, Operations Officer for East Asia Pacific Region Finance and Markets Global Practice at the World Bank.
North Country Public Radio, which celebrated its 50th anniversary this year, received the 2018 North Country Citation.
Visitors to Canton were warned that the two-span bridge over the Grasse River between Riverside Drive and Gouverneur Street downtown was undergoing a repair project
