St. Lawrence Thunder peewees take 12U championship

The St. Lawrence Thunder PeeWees relayed the momentum of an overpowering start into the 2017 NYSAHA Tier II 12U championship this past weekend in Western New York.

Coached by Darren Carr, Brian Terry and Ed Letham, the team opened with a 15-0 win over NJPE last Friday and never looked back in reeling off five straight wins and outscoring their opponents 36-8 over the course of the championship run.

They followed up the debut win by downing Valley 3-2 and the Westchester Vipers 5-2 before skating to an 8-1 decision over the Long Island Edge in the semifinals then outscoring Valley 5-3 in Sunday afternoon’s finals at the North Town Center.

Game Recaps

• Thunder 15, NJPE 0: Berkman led the offense with three goals and four assists as the Thunder skated out to a 5-0 lead by the end of the first. Jones tallied two goals and five assists. Phillips fashioned three goals and one helper John Marshall-Duffy finished with two goals and two assists. Netting the other goals were Palmer (1 assist), Adams (1 assist), Ryley Ashley (2 assist), Rhett Ashley and Terry. Producing assists in the win were Emerson with two while White, Mahoney, Carr, Letham and Cree with one each. Cree also backstopped the win.

• Thunder 3, Valley 2: Jones scored the opening goal and helped set up the other two in leading the way. Terry netted the other two goals, including the game-winner on the power play, while Berkman chipped in an assist and Sovie working the crease for the win.

• Thunder 5, Westchester 2: In the first round finale on March 18, Phillips sparked the Thunder with a three-goal effort. Jones logged a goal and two assists Terry accounted for the other goals and Cree goaltended the win.

• Thunder 8, LI 1: The Sunday semifinal against the Edge saw the Thunder break away from a 4-1 lead through two periods with a third-period barrage. Palmer (2 assists) and Phillips (1 assist) paced a balanced attack with two goals each. Netting singletons were Terry (1 assist), Ashley (1 assist), Adams and Jones. Solo assists went to Marshall-Duffy, Emerson, Letham, Mahoney and Berkman while Sovie handling crease duties.

• Thunder 5, Valley 3: In the championship game Sunday afternoon, the Thunder fell behind 2-1 midway through the second period before storming back to score the next three goals, including two in the final minute of the middle frame. Jones struck for three goals to anchor the winning offense. Terry (1 assist), Palmer and Adams connected for solo markers. Emerson earned a pair of assists while Letham and Berkman both finished with an assist and Sovie backstopped the win.
