St. Lawrence River Walleye Assoc. Northern Pike Fishing Derby expecting to draw 1,000 anglers

LOUISVILLE – The sixth annual St. Lawrence River Walleye Association Northern Pike Ice Fishing Derby expects to draw 1,000 anglers to the St. Lawrence River Feb. 25 to vie for the grand door prize of a new Polaris Sportsman 4x4 and the $1,000 per hour in fishing prizes.

Extra ice space has been added this year in the tournament area. Fishing will be along the St. Lawrence River at Fobares Pond from the train trestle to Rt. 37 including Coles Creek Marina and Bay, Wilson Hill, and Sucker Brook in Waddington.

Association Secretary Chris Hutchison says that “not only have our prizes grown over the years, our attendance has increased every year.”

The need for volunteers has increased, too, so no volunteers will be turned away, Hutchison says. “More weigh station attendants, ticket sales, and wacky hat judges are always welcome.” Volunteers can call Mike Gagner at 384-3450.

Fishing will be from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Anglers must check in first at the Louisville Fire Station on State Rt. 37 before 7 a.m. All fish must be released alive.

Youth can register and compete for a $5 registration fee. Adult fees are $30 until Feb. 10, and $35 after that. Complete rules and registration forms can be found at http://stlawrenceriverwalleyeassociation.com/id32.html, or call 384-3430. People can also sign up at The Ale House in Massena, Chapman’s Sport Shop in Black Lake, Green Machine Bait and Tackle on the Irish Settlement Road in Waddington, Massena Bait and Tackle on E. Hatfield Street, Nature’s Trophies in Waddington, and Sandy’s Tackle in Lisbon.

Competition prizes include $1,000 an hour for the biggest three pike -- $500 for the biggest, $300 for next biggest, and $200 for third biggest -- $100 each for largest pike and the largest walleye of the day, $50 for the wackiest hat, a free mount for the day’s biggest pike, and prizes for the largest perch caught by a youth angler 15 or younger. There will also be 50/50 raffles and door prizes, including the Polaris 4x4.

SLRWA is dedicated to preserving and restocking the Walleye species in the St. Lawrence River. All proceeds from the derby go directly into the association’s ponds and portable hatchery.
