St. Lawrence River summer research grants cancelled, next round deadline Jan. 2013

MASSENA—The St. Lawrence River Research Education Fund (SLRREF) Board says that its next deadline for accepting grant proposals will be January 1, 2013.

The summer 2012 award cycle, originally scheduled with a July 1, 2012 application deadline, will be withdrawn because of limited available funding.

Established as part of the 2003 relicensing of the New York Power Authority's (NYPA) St. Lawrence-Franklin D. Roosevelt Power Project, the fund provides financial support for environmental research and environmental education projects relating to the ecology of the St. Lawrence River watershed.

The monetary awards are generated each year from the annual interest on the NYPA relicensing funds commitment to establish SLRREF. Each year the SLRREF may award funding for proposals at either, or both, the January and July deadlines.

Since SLRREF’s founding in 2007, 18 projects have been approved for nearly $244,000 in NYPA funding through SLRREF. With matching grants of more than $216,000 from others, total funding for the projects is approximately $460,000.

The latest round of grants was announced last month, with a total of nearly $25,000 going to projects submitted by Clarkson University and Save the River.

A complete list of projects and grants is available at www.nypa.gov/facilities/slrref/SLRREFProjects.html.
