OGDENSBURG -- Ogdensburg officials accepted a state grant for $10,000 that will allow cruise ships on the St. Lawrence River to stop in Ogdensburg..

This comes after a river cruise ship cancelled a trip to the city last year because of security issues.

The Ogdensburg Bridge and Port Authority is also assisting in the effort by providing $5,000 in services to amend the United States Coast Guard's facilities security plan to include the city's municipal dock.

City Manager Sarah Purdy said the grant would help pay for a temporary security fence that would used as needed when ships schedule docking at the city. The fence would only be up when the city is expecting visitors.

Councilor Jennifer Stevenson said customs agents and local police would also be at the docks when the ships arrived.

Deputy Mayor Michael Morley asked about adding a phone for Canadian visitors who wished to enter the country at Ogdensburg’s docking facility.

Purdy pointed out that the issues are separate, but suggested it could be looked into. Recreation Director Matthew Curatolo said a phone system was already set up at the Dobisky Center to provide the service.

Last year, the MS St. Laurent announced it would not be stopping in Ogdensburg. The cruise ship had been schedule to visit the city ten times this summer, but instead docked in Clayton. The problem arose from the fact that the Dobsiky Center is not considered a secure location.

The $10,000 secured by Assemblywoman Addie J. Russell, will address those issues.
