St. Lawrence County’s unemployment rate in January fell more than a full percentage point from the same month in 2015, according to the state Department of Labor.
The rate went from 8.7 percent in January 2015 to 7.5 percent the first month of this year, the DOL said.
In numbers, that translates to 3,500 people on the dole at the beginning of this year compared to 4,000 in January 2015.
The DOL reports 43,000 people working in St. Lawrence County in the first month of 2016 and 42,300 in January 2015.
To our east in Franklin County, the unemployment rate fell 1.3 percent, from 6.7 percent in January 2015 to 8 percent in January 2016. Over that timeframe, the number of unemployed fell from 1,600 to 1,400, the DOL said.
Their number of people working went from 18,500 last year to 18,900 in January 2016.
To our west in Jefferson County, the rate fell 1.3 percent from 8.7 percent in January 2015 to 7.4 at the beginning of this year.
Their number of unemployed went from 4,000 in January 2015 to 3,500 in January of this year.
Their number of people working went from 41,700 last year to 43,200 at the beginning of this year, the DOL said.
