St. Lawrence County's unemployment rate dropped slightly in August from the previous month but still maintained the highest unemployment rate of any county upstate, the Department of Labor said.

In August, 7.8 percent of St. Lawrence County's workers received unemployment insurance benefits, the highest among counties outside of New York City. That's down from 8.3 percent in July, according the DOL. That's also a drop from a year ago, when the rate was 8.9 percent.

The August total of unemployed workers was about 3,500, down from 4,200 a year ago.

Those figures are not seasonally adjusted.

To our east in Franklin County, the August unemployment rate was 6.8 percent, compared to 8 percent a year ago. There were 1,500 workers receiving unemployment insurance, compared to 1,800 in August 2013, the DOL says.

To our west in Jefferson County, the rate for August was 6.9 percent, down from 8.2 percent a year ago. Their total number of unemployed was 3,300, down from 4,100 in August 2013, according to the DOL.
