St. Lawrence County has received $263,133 for its Summer Youth Employment Program, according to Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo.

Last year 122 teens participated in the program in St. Lawrence County, according to state staffers. Statewide, the program will employ 18,000 teens this summer,

The state Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance has distributed $25 million to all 57 counties in the state to cover the costs of the program.

The funding can be used to subsidize wages, to support education and training activities, or for counseling or employment-related services, such as transportation to and from work or training.

Participating youth will acquire skills to use in school and future careers.

“The program offers a great opportunity for employment to teenagers and young adults in underserved communities across New York State,” said Cuomo. “Introducing youth to their first job means they will gain valuable skills and experience that can help them achieve success in the future.”

Youth ages 14 to 20, whose families are recipients of public assistance, or who have a family income below 200 percent of the federal poverty level, are eligible.
