St. Lawrence County children can participate in Sen. Patty Ritchie’s “Make Libraries Your Winter Break Destination” art/essay contest.

Students in grades kindergarten through eighth grade can submit a one page essay or picture that depicts why they enjoy visiting their local library during February break.

All participating students will receive a special certificate and bookmark from Ritchie. Three winning entries—one each from Jefferson, Oswego and St. Lawrence Counties—will receive a special “book basket” filled with books and other educational materials.

A Republican from Heuvelton, Ritchie represents the 48th Senate District. It includes most of northern and western St. Lawrence County, and covers Ogdensburg, Canton and Gouverneur.

“When young people pick up a book, they’re given an opportunity to let their imaginations take flight, and at the same time, build critically important reading skills,” Ritchie said in an event announcement. “Our local libraries are the perfect place for students to do just that, and I hope that through this program, students and their families will be encouraged to visit their library and make reading a part of their winter break plans.”

Entries must be received by Feb. 28 and can be sent via email to ritchie@nysenate.gov or mailed to:

Office of State Senator Patty Ritchie

317 Washington St.

Watertown, NY 13601

All submissions must be accompanied by a program registration form, which is available for download at www.ritchie.nysenate.gov or can be mailed to participants by calling (315) 782-3418.
