St. Lawrence County will receive $1.6 million in federal funding to bolster Head Start programs

New York’s two U.S. senators, Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer and Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, said $1,628,564 will go to the Head Start program in St. Lawrence County through the county Community Development Program.

Head Start provides child development programs for low-income children, as well as supports and services for their families. Head Start programs primarily serve children ages three and four.

“The grant funds the Head Start Program in St. Lawrence County where we serve 351 children and their families,” said St. Lawrence County Community Development Program Executive Director Norma Cary.

“Head Start is a school readiness program for low-income children as well as children with disabilities,” Cary said “The program allows children to have a pre-school experience who might not otherwise have the opportunity. The whole family participates in some aspect of the program. We focus on education, nutrition, health and family services including family development.”

“Study after study shows that the better we prepare our young children, through programs like Head Start, the better they perform in school later in life,” said Sen. Schumer. “This federal funding for St. Lawrence County Community Development Program, Inc’s Head Start Program will bring real results to the North Country’s students, by providing them with the resources they need to succeed both in and out of the classroom. I am proud to support this essential funding and I will continue to fight to see that early child education remains a priority.”

“The Head Start and Early Head Start Programs help make sure that children across the North Country can have equal access to early childhood education,” said Sen. Gillibrand. “These federal funds will help give some of our most vulnerable children a strong start in life, and will provide them with the tools they need to learn and grow. I will always fight in the Senate for the resources to support New York families and help provide high-quality early childhood education.”

The federal funding was allocated through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and will be used to support child care services for low-income families in St. Lawrence County.
