St. Lawrence County will get $200,000 to establish children and family support team

CANTON – St. Lawrence County will get $200,000 from the New York State Office of Mental Health that will fund the hiring of two new positions and all costs associated with them.

At a Service Committee Monday, legislators agreed to accept $200,000 of reinvestment funding annually to create a children and family support team.

The team would provide weekend on-call and after-hour support to children and families in local communities and school district.

According to a resolution put forward by Chad Colbert, R-Potsdam, St. Lawrence County has limited resources to cover the needs of off-hour emergencies.

“The team will coordinate with and hold annual stakeholder meetings in each school district to identify areas where the team and Mental Health Clinic can better serve the needs of the community by establishing service priorities and reducing barriers to accessing care,” the resolution says. “There will be no county cost associated with having the Children and Family Support Team, and it is expected there will be an increase in caseloads and revenue in the Mental Health Clinic.”

According to the resolution $98,493 will be used to fund the two positions, while the remainder will be used for equipment, insurance, retirement, mileage and other costs associated with the creating the new team.

The resolution passed Monday, won’t become official until it is approved by the full board of legislators in September.
