St. Lawrence County unemployment rate higher in February 2017 compared to last year's count

St. Lawrence County’s unemployment rate rose slightly in February and more than 1,000 people were out of work compared to the same month last year, according to the Department of Labor.

The unemployment rate was 7.7 percent, above the 7.4 percent in February 2016. There were 3,300 people receiving the dole both in February 2016 and 2017, DOL said. The number of people working last month was 40,000, which is down from 41,200 in February 2016, DOL said.

The Franklin County unemployment rate also went up while the number of people working went down. Their rate was 7 percent last month, compared to 6.5 percent in February 2016. They had 1,400 people receiving unemployment in February and 1,300 the same month last year, DOL said. There were 18,500 people working last month and 18,900 employed in February 2016.

The Jefferson County unemployment rate went up to 8 percent last month from 7.5 percent the month before. They had 3,600 people receiving benefits in February and 3,400 people the same month last year. They also lost jobs, with 41,500 people working last month and 42,200 in February 2016, DOL said.
