St. Lawrence County under lake effect snow warning, hazardous weather outlook

A lake effect snow warning and a hazardous weather outlook have been issued for St. Lawrence County, according to the National Weather Service.

The snow warning begins tonight at 7 p.m. and will continue until 1 a.m. Friday. Areas expecting significant snowfall include Ogdensburg, Potsdam Gouverneur, Canton, Colton, Wanakena, Edwards, Russell and Star Lake.

The hazardous weather outlook begins Thursday and will continue through Tuesday.

Between 8 and 14 inches are expected East of Highway 11 and South of Route 56, with two to six inches expected elsewhere.

The maximum expected snowfall rate is one to two inches per hour.

The weather will make travel difficult as the snow will be accompanied by blowing wind and drifting snow.

Gusts ranging from 10 to 30 mph are expected New Year’s Day.

Temperatures will drop to as low as 12 degrees tonight and will rise into the 20s New Year’s Day.

Tonight: A 40 percent chance of snow showers. Cloudy, with a low around 17. Southwest wind 11 to 13 mph, with gusts as high as 34 mph. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

New Year's Day: A 50 percent chance of snow showers. Cloudy, with a high near 28. Breezy, with a southwest wind 14 to 20 mph, with gusts as high as 38 mph. New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible.

Thursday Night: A 40 percent chance of snow showers. Cloudy, with a low around 17. Southwest wind 11 to 16 mph decreasing to 5 to 10 mph after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 36 mph. New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible.

Friday: A 50 percent chance of snow showers before 5 p.m. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 23. Northwest wind around 6 mph. New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible.

Friday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 13. Northwest wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening.

Saturday: Partly sunny, with a high near 25. Southeast wind 3 to 5 mph.

Saturday Night: Snow and freezing drizzle likely. Cloudy, with a low around 22. East wind around 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70 percent.
