St. Lawrence County under flood watch through Friday, high wind warning until Thursday

The National Weather Service has St. Lawrence County under a hazardous weather outlook.

NWS meteorologists have called a flood watch for the area through Friday and a high wind warning through Thursday evening.

They say rising temperatures causing snow to melt could flood rivers and streams, and winds could get up to 35 mph with gusts moving as fast as 60 mph.

Forecasters say there is a 100 percent chance of rain today in all areas of the county.

Temperatures are predicted at a high of 53 in Gouverneur and a low of 43 in Massena.

The odds of rain countywide remain high tonight, at 90 percent. Temperatures are predicted to drop as low as 42 degrees in Potsdam and a few degrees cooler in the mountains.

Christmas Day will likely be wet, the NWS says. They call for a 60 percent chance of rain in most of the county. Massena is looking at 50 percent odds. Meteorologists predict thermometers to read 44 degrees in many areas and 41 degrees in Star Lake.

Thursday night is expected to be breezy north of the Adirondacks, with temperatures just above freezing. Southern St. Lawrence County could see snow after sunset.

Friday is expected to be sunny with temperatures in the mid-40s.

The detailed forecast for Potsdam:

Today - Rain. Patchy fog before noon. High near 47. Southeast wind 10 to 14 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100 percent. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

Tonight - Periods of rain. Low around 43. Southeast wind 7 to 13 mph becoming southwest after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 90 percent. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

Christmas Day - Showers likely, mainly before noon. Mostly cloudy, with a temperature falling to around 39 by 5 p.m. Windy, with a southwest wind 18 to 23 mph increasing to 24 to 29 mph in the morning. Winds could gust as high as 55 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60 percent. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

Thursday night - Mostly cloudy, with a low around 33. West wind 8 to 18 mph, with gusts as high as 36 mph.

Friday - Partly sunny, with a high near 41. Southwest wind 13 to 15 mph.

Friday night - Mostly cloudy, with a low around 31. Southwest wind 9 to 11 mph.

Saturday - A 30 percent chance of showers after 1 p.m. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 42. Southwest wind 9 to 16 mph.

Saturday night - A chance of rain and snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 29. West wind 10 to 18 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40 percent.

Sunday - A 40 percent chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 33. West wind 9 to 11 mph.

Sunday night - A 30 percent chance of snow showers. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 18. Northwest wind around 8 mph.

Monday - Mostly cloudy, with a high near 25. North wind around 8 mph.
