Business and education leaders in New York have sounded an alarm since they cannot find enough talented science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) students to stay competitive, so the St. Lawrence County Youth Bureau’s Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) plans to do its part.
This summer the YCC will align the focus of its summer program to increase the number of local young adults who choose to pursue studies and a career in those fields.
The Youth Bureau has designed the YCC STEM Internship Program, a five-week program to connect young people and employers in paid internships directly related to education and career goals and employers’ needs.
These internships are intended to prepare young people for STEM careers in the private and public sectors where employers define the performance standards and provide structured workplace learning. The Youth Bureau will provide stipends to county youth between the ages of 17 and 21 in the program.
The stated purpose of the program is to:
• help young people develop STEM career goals & workplace skills
• assist youth in developing personal networks in careers of their choice
• build bridges from one’s education to an individual’s STEM career.
Prospective applicants ages 17 to 21 interested in more details may email jsevick@stlawco.org, including your full name, address, email address, and telephone number.
