POTSDAM -- Students from around St. Lawrence County and beyond participated in the 2015 Very Special Arts Festival for children and adults with special needs.

The festival was held in SUNY Potsdam’s Maxcy Hall and is sponsored every year by the SUNY Potsdam Art and Math departments.

Students can participate in the festival in multiple ways. They can prepare a performance, submit a class banner or exhibit for display, or provide a hands-on workshop for other participants to enjoy. This year, the festival’s theme was “Surf’s Up” and all of the activities, performances, and even the attire was based on this theme.

Students in Mrs. Miller’s Lawrence Avenue Elementary class danced and moved to the classic Beach Boys tune, Surf’s Up during the performance section of the festival. They also received the first place prize for their banner, titled “Everyone is Surfing to the Special Arts Festival.

This year’s hands-on workshops included make and take photo frames, sea shell plaques, and smart foam rainbow glasses. Students also had the opportunity to get their picture taken in one of the oceanic photo booths.

Awards of appreciation were also presented to Community Bank for their 22 years of financial support and to the Elks Club for five years of donations.
