St. Lawrence County state legislators rated by business group

Posted

The three Republicans who represent St. Lawrence County in the state capital have received ratings from a business advocacy group, but lone Democrat fared poorly.

Senators Patty Ritchie and Joe Griffo and Assemblyman Ken Blankenbush, all Republicans, scored in the 80s out of a possible 100 points from the political organization and business advocate Unshackle Upstate.

Democrat Addie Russell received 42 points.

All of the state’s Senate and Assembly seats are up for election in November.

The group’s 2011-12 legislative scorecards, which can be seen at www.unshackleupstate.com/legislative-activity/scorecards/, grade legislators on Unshackle Upstate’s view of their legislative and budget votes and sponsorships of bills in the organization’s interests during the 2011 and 2012 legislative sessions.

Sen. Joseph Griffo, Republican from Rome representing the 47th Senate District and the eastern part of St. Lawrence County, and Patty Ritchie, Republican from Heuvelton representing the 48th District, including the western part of the county. each had a score of 82. They voted the same way on the pieces of legislation cited in Unshackle’s list, and were not awarded possible points for voting against the Power NY Act of 2011, which, among other things, aimed to establish a new process for siting of electric generating facilities.

Democrat Addie Russell of Theresa, who represents the 118th Assembly District, made 42 points in the organization’s ratings. Her score was reduced by 10 points for her support of minimum wage legislation.

Republican Ken Blankenbush of Black Lake, 122nd District Assemblyman, tallied a score of 87, losing points for his opposition to the Power NY Act of 2011.

Unshackle Upstate is a coalition of over 80 business and trade organizations in upstate New York, including the St. Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce. Their stated goal is to achieve reforms in Albany that make upstate a stronger place to do business.
