CANTON -- St. Lawrence County Sheriff Kevin Wells warned residents of an ongoing phone scam.
In a release issued Tuesday Wells said residents throughout the county have reported receiving phone calls, in which the scammer pretended to represent the Sheriff's Office and demanded money for phone calls made from inmates.
The calls have been received from 866-847-1251. A call to that number led to maze of redirections.
Wells said his office will never contact individuals to make payments for inmates.
"These are not legitimate calls," Wells said in the release. "Please disregard them and you can report any issues to 379-2222."
