The week of Sept. 21 is Sheriff’s Week in New York State, proclaimed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
Sheriff’s Week celebrates the contributions made by the office of sheriff in county government and in the statewide criminal justice system.
“Governor Cuomo’s proclamation not only recognizes the work of the county sheriffs, but it also recognizes the dedicated and professional work of deputy sheriffs, corrections officers, civil officers and civilian employees who work in sheriff’s offices throughout the state,” St. Lawrence County Sheriff Kevin Wells said.
Sheriff’s Week highlights the contributions made by the office of sheriff, the highest-ranking law enforcement office in the county.
In addition to traditional public safety services, such as road patrol, criminal investigation, narcotic investigations, mutual aid to local and state agencies and traffic control, the St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office patrols waterways and trail systems and maintains the county jail. The sheriff also takes an active role in community crime prevention efforts, victims' assistance programs, and drug awareness education in schools.
