St. Lawrence County will share a $182,000 federal Hazardous Materials Targeted Grant with Clinton, Franklin, Hamilton, Warren and Washington counties, said a press release from the governor's office.

The award was part of $2 million in the Hazardous Materials Targeted Grant program that were awarded statewide. This program helps fund regional HazMat teams outside of New York City to "respond to and recover from acts of terrorism and other emergencies."

Regions can use this funding to obtain and maintain essential equipment, implement the HazMat Team Accreditation Program, conduct trainings and exercises, and develop and update HazMat response plans, said the press release.

That program is part of $6.5 million dollars in federal Homeland Security grants being doled out by New York State’s Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services to various counties and municipalities to fund explosive detection canine teams, hazardous materials teams, tactical teams, and technical rescue and urban search teams, as well as the protection of critical infrastructure, said the press release.

The bulk of the funding is being funneled to Western New York, the press release said, with Central NY and the New York City regions close seconds, both clearing more than a million dollars, according to figures being distributed by the governor's office.

The funding breakdown by region is as follows:

Western New York will receive $1,889,010; the Capital region will get $705,500; Central New York will receive $1,053,261; the NYC/Metro region will get $1,073,894; the Mid-Hudson Valley is slated to receive $762,760; Long Island will get $503,000; and the Southern Tier area will get $230,000.

Jefferson County is slated to receive a $50,000 Haz Mat grant as well.
