St. Lawrence County residents warned of frostbite, hypothermia risk as wind chills could hit -22, weather service says

A wind chill advisory is in effect from 4 p.m. this afternoon until 11 a.m. on Friday across St. Lawrence County and the National Weather Service (NWS) is warning of frostbite and hypothermia risks.

There is a slight chance of snow showers after 1 p.m. today with temperatures falling to 6 degrees by 5 p.m., the service says. Wind chill values will be as low as -10.

The NWS says the coldest part of the North Country will likely be southern St. Lawrence County. Wind chill readings could be as low as 22 below due to temps of 6 to 10 below zero combined with 10 to 15 mph winds and 25 mph gusts.

The coldest temps will occur between 10 p.m. tonight and 8 a.m. Friday morning, the service says.

The NWS warns that frostbite and hypothermia an occur within 15 minutes if precautions are not taken.

A wind chill advisory means that very cold air and strong winds will combine to generate low wind chills. This will result in frostbite and hypothermia. If you go outside make sure to wear a hat and gloves, NWS says.

The high for Friday is 14 with wind chill values as low as -19. Snow is likely after midnight on Friday with a low around 11 degrees and wind chill values near zero, NWS says.

Thing warm up a bit on Saturday to about 32 with 2 to 4 inches of snow possible. The chance of snow on Saturday is 100 percent.

Increasing clouds, with a high near 14. Wind chill values as low as -19. Southwest wind around 8 mph.

Friday Night

Snow, mainly after midnight. Low around 11. Wind chill values as low as zero. South wind around 9 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of around an inch possible.

Saturday

Snow. High near 32. Southeast wind 5 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches possible.

Saturday Night

Snow and sleet likely before 9pm, then freezing rain likely between 9pm and 10pm, then rain after 10pm. Low around 29. Southeast wind 5 to 8 mph becoming southwest after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Sunday

A chance of rain and snow showers before 9am, then a chance of snow showers between 9am and 5pm. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 35. West wind 11 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 50%.
