St. Lawrence County will receive a portion of a $3 million homeless prevention grant from the Veterans Affairs office.
The grant will be split between St. Lawrence, Onondaga, Madison, Oneida, Herkimer, Broome, Jefferson and Lewis Counties.
The funds will be used to assist about 900 homeless and at-risk families of veterans as part of the Supportive Services for Veteran Families program.
“With these grants, we are strengthening our partnership with community non-profits across the country to provide Veterans and their families with hope, a home, and a future,” said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Eric K. Shinseki.
The grants will be used by private non-profit organizations and consumer cooperatives to provide services to very low-income veteran families living in, or transitioning to, permanent housing.
Community-based groups can offer temporary financial assistance for rent payments, utility payments, security deposits and moving costs.
Last year the program provided about $100 million to assist approximately 50,000 veterans and their families.
