St. Lawrence County Reality Check youth demonstrated in Richmond, Va. Thursday "to speak out against marketing tactics of big tobacco," group officials said.

Altria Group, Inc., one of the world’s largest producers and marketers of tobacco, held their annual shareholders meeting this morning in downtown Richmond, and St. Lawrence County Reality Check youth joined close to 100 other affilaited members from across New York and youth from Nebraska to tell Altria that they “won’t be bought,” according to an emailed statement.

“We’re not your next victims,” Hannah Preston, 16, from Hammond Central School, said in a prepared remark.

In another prepared statement, Ben Switzer, 13, from Ogdensburg Free Academy said “They should stop using bright colors on their packaging to attract kids like me.”

Reality Check youth attended training from Counter Tools of North Carolina, a resource they describe as for “local, state, and federal organizations working to counteract tobacco product sales and marketing at the point of sale.” Jessica Brown, 16, Hammond Central School, in the news release said “I learned so much more from the Counter Tools presentation.”
