Five St. Lawrence County re-enactors recently partook in an event in Washington, D.C. marking the 150th anniversary of the end of the Civil War.

They included “Captain” Scott A. Wilson of Louisville, “Private” Levi Wilson of Louisville, “Private” Dennis Barr of Canton, “Corporal” Martha Maine of Canton and “Sergeant” Gilbert Rivers of Canton.

They participated in a re-enactment of the Grand Review of Armies.

The original event was a military procession held on May 23 and 24, 1865 following the end of the war.

Elements of the Union Army of the Potomac under General Gordon Meade and Army of the Tennessee and Georgia under General William T. Sherman paraded through the streets of the capital in a victory celebration. This was also to afford the opportunity of the reviewing politicians and citizens to provide thanks for service, according to Wilson.

The route taken for the re-enactment was from the Capitol down Pennsylvania Avenue.
