St. Lawrence County is sixth from the bottom in health rankings of New York State counties.

The county is ranked 57th out 62 counties in New York, based on factors such as adult smoking (27 percent compared with 18 percent statewide and a national benchmark of 13 percent), adult obesity (32 percent, compared with 25 percent statewide and 25 percent benchmark), and 16 percent without health insurance compared with 14 percent across the state and 11 percent as the national benchmark.

These figures come from Çounty Health Rankings and Roadmaps, a web site with data from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, compiled by the Health Group at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, at http://www.countyhealthrankings.org.

They also calculated the number of people per primary care doctor (1,897 to one in the county, 1,222 to one across the state, and 1,067 to one as the national benchmark) and teen birth rate, where the county, at 23 per 100,000 people, is slightly better than the state count, as 25 per 100,000, but above the national benchmark at 21 per 100,000.

The top-ranked New York counties are Livingston, west of the Finger Lakes, and Rockland, north of New York City. The lowest-ranked counties are Sullivan, on the border with eastern Pennsylvania, and The Bronx, a borough of New York City.
