St. Lawrence County property tax exemption applications due March 1

The deadline for applying for property tax exemptions is March 1.

That reminder comes from James Snyder, assessor for Potsdam and Morristown and the president of the St. Lawrence County Assessors’ Association.

The guideline applies to new applications and any renewals for the upcoming 2016 tax roll year.

Almost all exemptions are due by March 1 for St. Lawrence County with the exception of the City of Ogdensburg. The City is on a different cycle and their deadline is April 1, Snyder says.

Those who own a own home that is their primary residence should apply for the STAR exemption if they haven’t already, Snyder says.

Home owners who will be 65 by Dec. 31, 2016 and make under $84,550 adjusted gross income should apply for the Enhanced STAR. Only one spouse of a married couple has to meet the age requirement to qualify.

There are hundreds of exemptions that may be available for property tax relief in a given taxing jurisdiction. Some of the more common ones other than STAR available are Aged, Capital Improvement, Disability/Limited Income and Veterans exemptions, to name a few.

“It’s a good idea to check with your local assessor to see what you may qualify for in your town or city,” Snyder says.

Don’t delay an application, he says, because those received after March 1 -- April 1 for Ogdensburg -- will be processed for next year’s tax roll of 2017.
