St. Lawrence County law enforcement agencies will be on patrol for impaired driving July 4 to 8, according to the St. Lawrence County STOP DWI program.

The Fourth of July extended weekend is historically a deadly period for impaired driving, program officials said.

The New York State Police, St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office and municipal law enforcement agencies will collaborate across the state and “will be out in force in this coordinated effort to aggressively target those who put lives in danger,” STOP DWI officials said.

The crackdown is one of many statewide enforcement initiatives promoted by the New York State STOP-DWI Foundation. The funding for this crackdown was provided by the New York State STOP- DWI Foundation through a grant through the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. During this period, law enforcement will “vigorously enforce laws related to driving while impaired with special emphasis on driving impaired either by alcohol or drugs,” the group said.

“There will be no warnings,” Michele James of St. Lawrence County STOP-DWI, said in a prepared statement. “Our message is simple—Don’t drink or drug and drive. Have a plan to get home safely. ‘Don’t Drive, Get a Ride.’ Violators will lose their licenses, pay increased insurance rates, fines, surcharges and DMV fees, and may have an ignition interlock device installed in their vehicle. The financial costs of that DWI conviction can start at $4,500. Driving impaired is not worth it.”
