CANTON — The St. Lawrence County Planning Office will accept requests adding land to an agricultural district through Thursday, March 30.

There are two agricultural districts in St. Lawrence County that primarily span across the St. Lawrence Valley and were created to protect farmland and farming activities.

Requests to add land to an ag district will be reviewed by the county’s Agricultural and Farmland Protection Board at their April 6 meeting at 7:30 p.m. in Canton.

The Ag and Farmland Protection Board will examine if the land is classified as agricultural by the local assessor; if the property receives an agricultural valuation; if the land is farmed or part of a farm operation based on aerial imagery; and if the farmland is consistent with local land use regulations.

The Ag Board will then make a recommendation to the County Board of Legislators on whether to accept the recommended additions.

A public hearing to receive comments on the Ag and Farmland Protection Board’s recommendation will be held Tuesday, April 18 at 7:30 p.m. in the Planning Office, which is located on the 2nd floor of the Public Safety Complex.
