St. Lawrence County Highway Department will be paving 26 miles of roads this summer, with the largest projects taking place in Hermon and Lisbon.

The county is receiving $3,903,961 from the Consolidated Highway Improvement Program funding and an additional $891,118 in PAVE-NY funding from the state this year.

While some details remain unclear on exactly what PAVE-NY funds can be used for, St. Lawrence County Highway Superintendent Don Chambers says the extra funding is good news.

“I don’t think the rules will be much different than what has been used for the CHIPS program,” he said. “But there is plenty of need in our system so we will work with what ever restrictions arise,” he said.

Chambers said the largest project will take place on County Route 27 from County Route 14 to Cold Springs Road in Lisbon where 5.94 miles will be paved.

Another major project will take place in Hermon on 3.31 miles of County Route 17 from U.S. Highway 11 to the Village of Herman.

Despite the scope of those projects, Chambers said traffic will be maintained throughout the work.

Most of the other paving projects will be limited to projects of about 1.5 miles or smaller.

Chambers said the county will also be doing some bridge work and replacing culverts, which could cause some brief traffic delays.

“We have three bridges we will be addressing this year and multiple large culverts we will be replacing,” he said.

In the Town of Lawrence a bridge on Foster Road will be replaced. Bridge work is also being done in Hewittville and plans are underway to rehabilitate the Bay Road Bridge in Fowler.

About 1.5 miles will be paved on County Route 11 from the village limits to Seavey Road in Gouverneur.

In Potsdam a 1.05-mile section of County Route 35 will be paved from South Canton Road to U.S. Highway 11. A second portion of County Route 35 will be paved between U.S. Highway 11 to Judson Street.

In Hermon 1.5 miles will be paved on County Route 19 from the village limits to the Town Line Road.

A 1.62-mile section of County Route 24 will be paved in Edwards running from Dana Hill to County Route 17. A .62-mile section of County Route 24 will also be paved from Russell Hill to the Pyrites Road in the Town of Russell.

On County Route 33 1.34 miles will be paved from County Route 31 to Harper the Harper Road in Lisbon.

A 1.5-mile section of County Route 14 will be paved between County Route 36 to Country Route 37 in Louisville. A 1.5-mile section of 14 will also be paved between the Hardscrabble Road and County Route 44.

On County Route 52 a 1.46 mile section will be paved between State Route 11C and Cemetery Road in the Town of Lawrence.

A 1.5 mile section of County Route 55 will be paved from State Route 11B to Cady Road in Brasher.

Two sections of County Route 59 will be paved near State Route 56 and the Sweeney Road in Potsdam for a total of 2.1 miles.
