St. Lawrence County officers to target drunk drivers over Memorial Day Weekend

St. Lawrence County police agencies will participate in a special enforcement effort to crackdown on substance impaired driving.

The statewide STOP-DWI Memorial Weekend Crackdown effort runs from May 26 to May 29.

Memorial Weekend is historically a deadly period for impaired driving. Memorial Day weekend is the traditional beginning of summer.

In addition there will be thousands of parties and barbeques to celebrate graduations, proms, communions, and confirmations now that the better weather has finally arrived. This combination of factors equates to more people on the road in general and more people specifically driving impaired. New York State Police, County Sheriff and local law enforcement agencies across the state will be out in force in this across-the-board effort to reduce the number of impaired driving injuries and deaths.

As part of the New York State STOP-DWI Enforcement Crackdowns, St. Lawrence County STOP-DWI will be working with New York State Police and Ogdensburg Police Department in their efforts to protect everyone from substance impaired drivers either by alcohol and/or drugs during this busy time of year.

The funding for this crackdown was provided by the New York State STOP-DWI Foundation through a grant from the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee via the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

During this time period, law enforcement will vigorously enforce laws related to driving while impaired with special emphasis on impaired driving either by alcohol or drugs.
