The St. Lawrence County Office for the Aging is expanding services in its nutrition program to Gouverneur.

Early this fall, the office will be opening a Congregate Dining Center at the Gouverneur Community Center at 4673 State Highway 58 in Gouverneur, according to Office for the Aging Director Andrea Montgomery in a n emailstatement to the press.

The kitchen operations at the current Edwards Nutrition Center will move to the Gouverneur Community Center. The community room at the Edwards Housing will remain open.

Any senior, age 60 and over, who would like to eat at the community room in Edwards would be welcome to do so by calling (315) 386-4730; 24 hours in advance to reserve a meal. The meal would be delivered to the community room the next day at a designated time and clients are welcome to sit and enjoy their meal in a congregate setting.

All home delivered meal clients currently on the Edwards, Gouverneur and Star Lake routes will continue to be served.

The opening of the Gouverneur Community Center will allow the program to serve even more older adults in St. Lawrence County, Montgomery said. The congregate dining center in Star Lake will become a full prep site in their Department of Health certified kitchen and will be delivering meals to home delivered meal clients in the surrounding areas. Current Office for the Aging staffing levels will remain the same.

The congregate dining center in Gouverneur will be open to the public. Seniors age 60 and above are invited daily at noon for a hot meal and good company. There is a suggested donation of $3 for seniors age 60 and above, but no client is turned away due to inability to donate. There is a $5 guest fee for anyone who would like to eat under the age of 60.

Currently, the Office for the Aging has a waitlist in the Gouverneur area of over 21 clients for home delivered meals.

This expansion will allow the Office for the Aging to alleviate that wait list, Montgomery said, as well as serve seniors in the Gouverneur area for a lunchtime meal at the Gouverneur Community Center.
