After an iffy forecast for the weekend earlier in the week, with forecasters guessing which way the remains of Hurricane Isaac would go, the outlook for this Labor Day weekend in the St. Lawrence Valley is very good.
A cold front is sweeping southeastward from southern Quebec and will cross the North Country late this evening pushing some additional showers and a few thunderstorms ahead of it, according to the National Weather Service.
Winds, shifting to the north, will usher in drier and somewhat cooler air, so temperatures for the holiday weekend will be near average for early September. Then a large area of high pressure over the northern great lakes is drifting slowly our way, to maintain dry and pleasant conditions for the North Country through Monday. High temperatures will generally be in the 70s.
The next chance for rain appears Monday night into Tuesday.
The NWS forecast for the St. Lawrence Valley and northwestern Adirondacks:
This Afternoon: A chance of showers and thunderstorms. Some of the storms could produce gusty winds. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 80. Southwest wind around 11 mph, with gusts as high as 22 mph. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.
Tonight: Mostly cloudy, then gradually becoming clear, with a low around 53. West wind 5 to 7 mph becoming calm after midnight.
Saturday: Sunny, with a high near 73. North wind 5 to 7 mph becoming calm in the afternoon.
Saturday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 47. Calm wind.
Sunday: Sunny, with a high near 74. Calm wind becoming northwest around 6 mph in the afternoon.
Sunday Night: Mostly clear, with a low around 54.
Labor Day: Mostly sunny, with a high near 81.
Monday Night: Showers likely. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 64. Chance of precipitation is 60%.
Tuesday: Showers likely. Cloudy, with a high near 79. Chance of precipitation is 60%.
