St. Lawrence County Legislature takes no action on Amish buggy resolution

CANTON – St. Lawrence County Legislators took no action on a resolution that would have forced Amish to put slow moving vehicle signs on their buggies.

The council tabled the resolution at a previous meeting after the council debated the issue.  Although it was on Monday’s agenda, it remained tabled.

The resolution was proposed by Larry Denesha. The resolution states that the Amish population has increased and so havethe number of buggies on St. Lawrence County’s roads and highways.

“As Amish communities spread across the geographic areas of St. Lawrence County, combined with frequent travel, there has been an increase in the number of automobile and Amish buggy accidents as well as a number of unreported near misses,” the resolution says.

The resolution requests the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles to require the Amish to install slow moving vehicle emblems “on all means of transportation used on public roads and highways.”

Amish object to using the signs because they say the bright colors are in contrast with their religious beliefs.

Currently, the Amish are required to place reflective gray strips on the back of their buggies, but some say the reflectivity is not strong enough.

Last week Senator Patty Ritchie held a private forum to discuss possible compromises that could be reached between county legislators and the Amish community.

At the meeting both sides agreed to explore their options, but no decisions were made.

The county is expected to revisit the issue at a later date.
