CANTON -- St. Lawrence legislators honored Heuvelton’s state champion girls basketball team at a services committee meeting Monday.

Oswegatchie legislator Joseph Lightfoot, who represents the Heuvelton area, presented the team members and coaching staff with certificates for their achievements. For some of the team members this was the second year in a row they were honored by the county.

Lightfoot said the girls made the entire county proud and thanked them for their efforts.

“St. Lawrence County is very proud of the achievement of the team as student athletes for devoting the time and energy and putting forth a team effort thereby bringing honor and credit to their school, town and county,” the resolution says. “It is with great pride that board of legislators recognizes the outstanding accomplishments of the Heuvelton Girls’ Basketball team and their coaches on the impressive and successful championship season.”

Coach Rob Powers said he was impressed by the overwhelming support from St. Lawrence County residents. He also credited the girls for their work ethic.

“This is the hardest working group of athletes you’ll ever see,” he said.

Team members include Paige McCormick, Nathalie Barr, Madison McCormick, Alexandria Steele, Kristi Donnelly, Kaden Mack, Carin Sherwood, Karina Warren, Hannah Thornhill, Paige Weston, Jaelin Calkins, Gabrielle Johnson, Alyssa Johnson, Eliza Martin, Natchaya "Pattie" Paramesthanakom and Kelsey Williams.

The Bulldogs are coached by Rob Powers and Austin Weakfall. Lara Martin was the team's manager this season.

Heuvelton beat Panama 62-60 last month to repeat as the New York State Class D champions. They defeated Eldred 59-45 in the state semis and have won 31 straight games dating back to the title run in the 2014-15 season.

The county also help a brief meet and greet where the team was treated with cookies.
