St. Lawrence County legislators praise Senate passage of UTV bill, call on governor to allow registration of larger off-road vehicles

CANTON -- St. Lawrence County Legislators passed a resolution of support for a Senate bill that would allow registration of universal task vehicles at a Monday finance committee meeting.

The bill was passed by the Senate, raises the defined weight of an ATV to 1,500 pounds of dry weight to allow certain UTVs to be registered in New York State.

Now the state only allows registration of vehicles weighing 1,000 pounds or less.

Increasing the weight limit by 500 pounds would allow users to register their UTVs and would generate revenue for the state and St. Lawrence County, according to the resolution.

“The allowance of registrations is anticipated to peak interest in the purchase of UTVs in New York State which will generate additional sales tax revenue,” the resolution says. “New York, being the only state that does not allow riders to register vehicles that weigh over 1,000 pounds, is missing out on millions of dollars in sales tax, registration fees, gas, food, and lodging that the upstate economy desperately needs.”

The resolution “applauds” Sen. Patricia Ritchie, Sen. Joseph Griffo “and their colleagues for their tireless work, support, and effort to increase the weight limit by including this important language in their one-house budget resolution and also recognize and thank Assemblywoman Addie Russell in her relentless work on this issue.”

The resolution urges Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo to move forward on the legislation.
