CANTON – St. Lawrence County legislators will meet for the first time in 2016 at 7 p.m. tonight at the courthouse where they will adopt meeting procedures and discuss several resolutions regarding healthcare costs, budget issues and internships at the public defender’s office.

Among the resolutions to be discussed are:

• Legislators will act on a resolution that would allow the county to put out a request for proposal for health insurance provided to county employees and retirees. The resolution cites challenges in managing the negative fund balance and escalating costs for operating government

• The county legislator is expected to take action on a deal with the Development Authority of the North Country to hose Geographic Information Systems mapping. The deal will payout $3,900 over the next three years to DANC for the service.

• The county will consider designating the county public defender’s office as an internship site by establishing a partnership with SUNY Canton.

• A resolution proposed by legislator Joe Timmerman would seek to put $3 million in the county’s coffers in 2016. The resolution comes in the wake of Moody’s Investors Service downgrade of the county’s bond rating. If passed, the resolution would require the county administrator to work with department heads to identify a minimum of $3 million that can be moved to the unassigned fund balance.
