CANTON – St. Lawrence County Legislator David Forsythe, R-Lisbon, called for a resolution Monday that would ask citizens not to hunt for does during late black powder season.
Forsythe said St. Lawrence County said the Department of Environmental Conservation says it wants to increase the number of deer in the area.
Forsythe said that’s counter intuitive to hunting does this time of year because they are often bred. He questioned how well the DEC was managing the wildlife population in St. Lawrence County.
Legislators Rick Perkins and Larry Denesha agreed with Forsythe’s call, as did several other members of the board.
Legislator Kevin Acres, R-Madrid, disagreed though. He said deer are abundant at his Chipman farm. Acres said he is not in favor of such a resolution and added that the deer near him were well fed on his crops.
No action was taken on the matter.
