CANTON -- St. Lawrence County legislative chairman Jonathan Putney retained his position as the county's leader following a party line vote Thursday.
Putney, a Democrat from Waddington, took over the position formerly held by the now-retired Sally Brothers.
During his time as board chairman Putney was actively involved in the successful push to retain services at the St. Lawrence Psychiatric Center and supportive of the 2013 Bassmaster Elite Series in Waddington. He also worked with state lawmakers to raise the sales tax by 1 percent in an effort to reduce the property tax burden.
Republican Alex MacKinnon, Fowler, was nominated for the position by Republican Joseph Lightfoot, Oswegatchie, but lost in a 9-5 vote.
Donald Peck, Democrat and representative of Gouverneur, was named vice chairman.
