St. Lawrence County League of Women Voters' election resources available

The St. Lawrence County League of Women Voters says that two of its voter education resources for 2018 are now available.

The League’s Voter Guide Part II includes candidate information for all state-wide candidates in New York State. This year’s guide had nearly 100 percent participation from the state-wide candidates. It is available online at https://lwvnyonline.org/advocacy/vote/2018/Voters-Guide_2_2018_final.pdf.

The League’s 2018 Voter Guide Part I has information and deadlines on voter registration, absentee ballots and more. It is at https://www.lwvnyonline.org/advocacy/vote/2018/Voters-Guide_1_2018_final.pdf.

The local St. Lawrence County League has ordered paper copies of both guides which will be distributed at the county’s public libraries as soon as they arrive.

"The local League has just learned that local voter registration efforts on National Voter Registration Day, Sept. 25, earned St. Lawrence County second place in the number of new voters registered according the NYS League,” county League of Women Voters president Kathleen Stein of Canton said. “Thanks in particular to efforts at SUNY Canton, lead by Carol Simpson, and SUNY Potsdam, led by Jessica Heffner, 203 new voters were registered and nearly 150 absentee ballots were handed out that day."

The organization will once again be supplying thousands of “I Voted” stickers to the county Board of Elections for distribution on Election Day Nov. 6. The stickers are made possible in part by a contribution from the St. Lawrence County AAUW.

“The local League of Women Voters is committed to helping to promote voting and recognizing the good citizenship of St. Lawrence County voters. These stickers are a visible thank you to the voters who get to the polls on Election Day for these important mid-term and local races," said Stein.

The LWV, in co-sponsorship with AAUW and the Potsdam Public Library, is producing several Conversations with Candidates video programs for voter education on North Country Matters this fall. The featured races include candidates for the St. Lawrence County Board of Legislators from Districts 7, 8 and 11, the Potsdam Village Board of Trustees, and the 116th “River District” Assembly race.

The St. Lawrence County League is a nonpartisan political organization open to women and men that encourages informed and active participation in government, works to increase understanding of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy.
