St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department and police agencies in Ogdensburg and Norfolk will receive $142,228 form the Department of Homeland Security.
On Monday St. Lawrence County’s finance committee accepted a $167,228 Operation Stonegarden Program Grant aimed at improving border security within the county.
According to the resolution, St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office will receive $65,084, Ogdensburg Police Department will receive $49,637 and Norfolk Town Police will receive $27,507.
The remaining $27,507 will go to state police, park police and DEC officers who will do their own reporting.
According to Home Land Security, The Operation Stonegarden Program supports “enhanced cooperation and coordination among Customs and Border Protection, United States Border Patrol and local, Tribal, territorial, state, and Federal law enforcement agencies.”
The program also funds investments in joint efforts to secure the United States borders along routes of ingress from international borders to include travel corridors in states bordering Mexico and Canada, as well as states and territories with international water borders.
St. Lawrence County’s proximity to the border makes it a prime candidate for the grants.
