CANTON -- A county jail inmate has been charged in connection with an altercation between him and a corrections officer on May 28.

Joseph J. Belile, 30, an inmate at the St. Lawrence County Correctional Facility, is alleged to have refused orders by a corrections sergeant at the jail, and physically resisted when the sergeant continued to try to get Belile to comply, according to the St. Lawrence County Sheriff’s Office.

“Once restrained, Belile spit in the face of the sergeant,” the statement from the Sheriff’s Office said.

Belile has been charged with felony attempted assault and misdemeanor third-degree menacing.

Belile is to appear in Canton Town Court later this month to answer the charges.
