St. Lawrence County Horticulture Team earns spot at National Junior Horticulture Association Convention in San Diego Saturday

The St. Lawrence County Horticulture Team took part in this year's State Fair Horticultural Competition and several members will be competing as representatives of New York state at the National Junior Horticulture Association Convention in San Diego Saturday, Oct. 8.

At the state fair, from left, row 1: Jennifer Rastley, Brooke Rastley both of Gouverneur; row 2: Alyssa Sands (Antwerp), Sarah Rastley (Gouverneur), Maureen Pierce (Heuvelton); row 3: Adam Romlein, Mia Brown, both of Potsdam; row 4: Josiah McCarthy (Potsdam), Reilly Pierce (Heuvelton), Bill Mackentley (Potsdam), Colleen Tweedie (Gouverneur), Sydney Brown (Gouverneur, Heather Tweedie (Gouverneur); row 5: Amy Sands (Antwerp), Robert Rastley (Gouverneur), Connor Pierce (Heuvelton), Connor Hardiman (Potsdam), Xavier Tweedie (Gouverneur).

Connor Hardiman (Potsdam), Connor Pierce (Heuvelton), and Brooke Rastley (Gouverneur) will represent the state on the 4H team.

Heather Tweedie (Gouverneur), Robert Rastley (Gouverneur), and Reilly Pierce (Heuvelton) will represent the state on the Open Team.

This is the 77th year this convention has been held in the U.S. to test the horticultural skill of teens across the country.

Horticulture members attending will be tested on plant identification, judging of plants, and a written section of the test.

St. Lawrence's Horticulture Club is led by gardener Bill Mackentley of St. Lawrence Nurseries, Madrid Road, Potsdam.

Donations to help defray the costs of travel may be sent to Mackentley.

Diane Romlein of Potsdam co-leads the club.
