St. Lawrence County homeowners beating state average for STAR tax exemption registrations
More than half of the eligible homeowners in St. Lawrence County and around New York State have registered for Basic STAR exemptions.
In fact, in St. Lawrence County, and in neighboring Franklin and Jefferson counties, 60 percent of eligible property owners have registered.
More than 2.6 million homeowners are receiving the Basic STAR exemption and saving an average of $700 on their property taxes, according to the department.
The registration deadline is Dec. 31.
Tax Commissioner Thomas Mattox reminded homeowners that they must register with New York State even if they initially applied for Basic STAR with their local assessors.
People may register online at www.tax.ny.gov, or can call 518-457-2036 to register by phone .
Seniors receiving Enhanced STAR are not affected by this registration. They will continue to apply annually or participate in the Income Verification Program.
Last year, a Tax Department study identified thousands of property owners who were receiving more than one STAR exemption on multiple properties. The registration program is designed to protect homeowners from that sort of fraud and waste.
