St. Lawrence County Historical Association memory tree honored 70 Civil War vets from the North Country

CANTON – Nearly 7,000 men from St. Lawrence County enlisted for the Union cause during the Civil War. In honor of these men, the St. Lawrence County Historical Association decorated a special memory tree at the museum for the holidays using ornaments with the names of more than 70 Civil War veterans, mostly from the North Country.

The Civil War memory tree was part of the SLCHA’s Commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, which was fought from 1861-1865. Another memory tree is planned for December 2012.

The names of all the veterans on the memory tree were read at the SLCHA’s annual Holiday Open House on Dec. 2.

As part of the project the SLCHA archived the veterans’ information and scanned their images to add to the SLCHA’s growing collection of St. Lawrence County’s Civil War heritage.

The tree contained the names of more than 70 Civil War veterans, mostly from the North Country, including:
