CANTON -- The Cooper’s Falls Grist Mill and Blast Furnace, the Vasco P. Abbott House in Gouverneur, and the Crane Normal Institute, Potsdam, are the latest buildings to be reproduced in miniature by the St. Lawrence County Historical Association.

The buildings are part of a hand-painted, limited edition series which are produced in conjunction with artisans Glenn and Marty Pierce to recognize architecturally significant structures in St. Lawrence County. The cost for a set of all three buildings is $30, while individual buildings are $12 each, with all proceeds benefiting the Historical Association.

The first miniature actually includes two adjacent structures from Cooper’s Falls, an early settlement in DeKalb. The grist mill was built by Judge William Cooper in 1804, and the blast furnace was built by the Cooper’s Falls Iron Company in 1864. Both structures lie in ruins on the shore of the Oswegatchie River.

The Vasco P. Abbott House is located at 153 Main St., Gouverneur and was built circa 1870-1880. V. P. Abbott was a prominent attorney who also served as Special County Judge (1876-1881) and St. Lawrence County Surrogate (1881-1893). The house is still standing and currently is home to a chiropractic office.

The Crane Normal Institute is one of five Potsdam buildings which housed the Crane Institute of Music over the years. The house was purchased by Julia Crane in 1896 and served as both the Institute and a home for Julia and her sister, Harriet Crane Bryant. This building was torn down in the 20thcentury and the land where it stood is now a parking lot for old Congdon Hall.

To order, or to inquire about other buildings in the series, contact the St. Lawrence County Historical Association, at 3 East Main Street, Canton, 386-8133 or info@slcha.org. The society has produced historic miniature buildings since 1993 and has a number of buildings available from previous years.
